RELAY STATION: SEA OF TRANQUILITY, 20 JUL 1969. The finest broadcast the Authority ever intercepted was narrated from the surface of the Moon, and the computer that flew it worked in numbered PROGRAMS: P63, the braking burn. P64, the approach. And the one under which the Eagle actually set down — P66. (P65 was never flown; the commander took it semi-manual.) Five times the computer complained — 1202s, a lone 1201 — and flew on, every time. (Those alarm numbers are the story's colour, not your dial.)

AUTHORIZATION: fly the descent on your dial. Three programs, in order. Between programs the set holds its breath — twice — and static is the sound of a held breath, not a refusal. THE LANDING IS THE LICENSE.
